Medicinal value:

Its antioestrogenic effect has been suggested experimentally, so it is advised to be used as oral contraceptive.

Studies also support its traditional anti infectious action. It is used mainly in helminthiasis, and antifungal agent in ringworm, and in other chronic dermatoses. It is also given, boiled in milk, to infants as a digestive and against recurrent upper respiratory infections.

Effect of oral feeding of extract of E. ribes were studied on diabetic rats and it was found to decrease in blood glucose, serum total cholesterol, and triglycerides, and increase in HDL cholesterol levels. Further, the extract also lowered the liver and pancreas thiobarbituric acid–reactive substances (TBARSs) values (P < 0.01). The results of test drug were comparable to gliclazide (25 mg/kg, orally), a standard antihyperglycemic agent.

The Pippalyadi Yoga, a combination of Pippali (Piper longum Linn.- fruit) Vidanga (Emblia ribes Burm.f.-fruit) and Tankana (Borax), has been extensively studied in fertile female volunteers at Central Research Institute for Ayurveda, Kolkata and Research Scheme for Screening of Contraceptive Agents, Ahmedabad. Multicentric, Toxicological, Terratogenic and Safety Studies on Pippalyadi Yoga has been conducted at PGI, Chandigarh; JIPMER, Pondichery and KEM Hospital, Mumbai and no adverse effect in hormonal, biochemical, endometrial and sonographic studies for ovulation has been reported. All these studies suggest "Pippalyadi Yoga" a good oral contraceptive.
