Common Name:
Garlic(Eng.)-The word garlic comes from Old English garleac, meaning "spear leek."
 
Sanskrit Name:
Rasona- A plant that is deficient in one taste, as Rasona is having all the three tastes excepts the sour one.

Rasa (Taste): As said above Rasona is having the five tastes with itself; these are as follows- 
Roots-  Katu (Pungent); Leaves- Tikta (Bitter); Stem-Kashaya (Astringent); Tip of stem- Lavana (Salty); Seeds- Madhura (Sweet)
Guna (Characteristics): Snigdha (Unctuous); Teekshna (Sharp); Pichchhila (Sliminess); Guru (Heavy); Sara (Mobile)
Veerya (Potency): Ushna (Warm)
Vipaka (Post digestion taste): Katu (Pungent)
 
Actions according to Ayurveda:
Krimighna- Useful in infectiuous conditions
Kushtha kilasaghna- Valued therapeutically in all skin diseases
Vrishya- Increases sexual desire
Balya- Increases strength of body
Bhagna asthi sandhankara- Good healer of fractured bone
Hrudya roga hara- Useful in heart diseases

Shwashara- Useful in respiratory discomfort specially asthmatic conditions

Varna kara- Enhanves complexion of the body

Restrictions:
When one is taking Rasona for therapeutic purpose he should avoid exercise, stay in sun, anger, taking too much water, milk, and jaggery; this will aggravate the disease instead of benefitting.
 
Medicinal value:
  • Garlic is claimed to help prevent heart diseases including atherosclerosis, high cholesterol, hypertension and blockage in arteries.
  • Study showed that supplementation with garlic extract inhibites vascular calcification in human patients with high blood cholesterol.
  • A stronger tasting clove of garlic has more sulphur content, because of its sulfur content it is very beneficial in infection and skin diseases.
  • In 1858, Louis Pasteur observed garlic's antibacterial activity, and it was used as an antiseptic to prevent gangrene during World War I and World War II.
  • In 2007 a BBC news story reported that Allium sativum may have beneficial properties, such as preventing and fighting the common cold.
  • Modern science has shown that garlic is a powerful antibiotic, albeit broad-spectrum rather than targeted. The body does not appear to build up resistance to the garlic, so its positive health benefits continue over time.
  • Garlic - especially aged garlic -have a powerful antioxidant effect. Antioxidants help to protect the body against damaging "free radicals".
 
Contraindications:
Rasona should not be given in pregnancy and to Pitta body type people.

Doses:
Paste of rhizome- 3-6 gm; oil - 1-2 drops
 
Some combinations with Rasona:
Rasona vati; rasona pinda; Rasonashtaka; Lashunyadi ghruta
 
Some special notes about Rasona :
Rasona is useful for pacifying all the three Doshas; for aggravated Vata it should be taken with clarified butter, for Pitta with sugar and for Kapha with honey.
