  • Medicinal Uses of HadjodThis review highlights some of the phytochemical and pharmacological aspects of Cissus quadrangularis Linn. Cissus quadrangularis,  a perennial climber widely used in traditional medicinal systems of India has been reported to posses bone fracture healing, antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, anthelmintic, antihemorrhoidal and analgesic activities. Cissus quadrangularis Linn. Has been recognized as a rich source of carotenoids, triterpenoids and ascorbic acid and is proved to have potential for medical effects, including “Gastroprotective activity” in conjugation with NSAID therapy and in “Lipid metabolism and oxidative stress”.

  • Usefulness in bone fracture: A study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of methanolic extract of Cissus quadrangularis (CQ) on the healing process of experimentally fractured radius-ulna of dog. CQ treated animals revealed faster initiation of healing process than the control animals on radiological and histopathological examinations. The treated group also revealed a decrease in serum calcium level to a greater extent than the control group. Healing was almost complete on 21st day of fracture in the treated animals and remained incomplete in the control animals. No significant alteration of serum calcium level was observed on 21st day of fracture in both the groups.

  • Usefulness in obesity: Hadjod is believed to help heal broken bones, thus its name asthisamharaka (which prevents the destruction of bones). It is said to have antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, anthelmintic, antihemorrhoidal and analgesic activities. It contains a rich source of carotenoids, triterpenoids and ascorbic acid. In a study in Cameroon, high doses of the extracts have been shown to have beneficial effects against obesity and associated oxidative stress. Its bactericidal effects on Helicobacter pylori hold promise as a potential treatment of gastric ulcers in conjunction with NSAID therapy. A weight loss supplement containing Cissus quadrangularis and other ingredients including green tea, soy, selenium, chromium, and B vitamins was evaluated in an 8-week trial. The supplement helped reduce body weight by 4-8% (placebo 2.4%) a clinically significant weight loss.

  • General Usefulness:The increased rate of bone healing byHadjod may be of great significance to persons suffering from chronic diseases like osteoporosis, the antiglucocorticoid properties of Cissus are likely of much more interest to the average bodybuilder or athlete, since endogenous glucocorticoids, particularly cortisol, are not only catabolic to bone, but catabolize muscle tissue as well.
  • Beneficial for muscle health: Although the bulk of the research on Cissus centers around bone healing, the possibility exists that Cissus may act to improve bone healing it may improve the healing rate of connective tissue in general, including tendons. If this is the case it would be of great benefit to bodybuilders and athletes.
  • Analgesic: Cissus also possess analgesic properties comparable to aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen. The mechanism through which Cissus exerts its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties has not been well characterized. It may act centrally, but the anti-inflammatory features suggest that it acts by preventing the conversion of arachidonic acid to inflammatory prostaglandins.
